Cameron has had a distinguished career that includes being the CFO at a number of successful organizations including a venture capital firm and a venture-backed medical device company.
Concurrent with starting NFS, Cameron has been the CFO at a closely-held company that doubled in value during his three-year tenure. He was hired on to help increase value and position the company for strategic opportunities. He has had oversight of finance, accounting, purchasing/logistics, inventory management, and human resources.
From 2007 through 2014, Cameron was the CFO at OrthoHelix Surgical Designs, Inc. OrthoHelix was a venture-backed medical device company that grew from $1 million in sales at the time Cameron joined to nearly $30 million in sales when it was sold five years later. $22 million in equity was raised from venture capital investors prior to the sale of the company. OrthoHelix was sold to Tornier in 2012 for over $135 million resulting in excess of six times return to investors. Cameron’s work at OrthoHelix earned him the CFO of the Year award from Crain’s Cleveland Business in 2011.
Prior to OrthoHelix, Cameron was the CFO at Crystal Ventures, a $240 million venture capital firm with offices in Cleveland, Palo Alto, Singapore, and Taiwan. Crystal invested in a portfolio of technology companies including About.com, Cobalt Networks, and Sina.com. Cameron started as the Controller in 2000 and was promoted to CFO in 2003. He was responsible for all aspects of administration and operations including reporting and compliance for multiple investment funds and management entities. He was also involved in managing the portfolio companies. He worked with a number of companies, both inside and outside of Crystal’s portfolio, to provide services such as accounting and reporting, the preparation of operating plans, maintenance of capitalization tables/liquidation models, etc. While at Crystal, Cameron was included in the inaugural class of Crain’s Cleveland Business “Twenty in their 20s”.
Cameron started his career in the audit department at Arthur Andersen where he worked with a number of clients including venture capital firms and venture-backed companies. He also earned his CPA license while at Arthur Andersen. He graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s of science from the University of Akron. Cameron is also a member of the Private Equity CFO Association and the American Institute of CPAs.
Shelley has dedicated over 11 years to providing excellence as a full-service controller in the Venture Capital industry. Prior to co-founding NFS with Cameron, she successfully demonstrated her skills both as an in-house controller of a $240 million venture capital firm and later as an outsourced controller via her own consulting firm.
In 2013, Shelley formed her own consulting business, Revivify LLC. Shelley contracted with both VC and PE funds to provide controller services to managers who needed the experience of a seasoned controller, but did not need the services of a full-time employee. Shelley also contracted with a now well-known fund administrator, who at the time was a newly formed firm based in the San Francisco Bay area. Her role was that of a consulting controller who remotely managed client back office fund administration and the related management companies as well. During this time with the firm, Shelley worked with 9 different fund families. Just prior to leaving her consulting role, she simultaneously worked with 6 different client fund families and a total of 17 Funds with a combined total of $400 million in assets under management. This position was a wonderful opportunity to work with a variety of venture clients of various sizes, many differing LPA’s and a host of different legal and audit/tax providers.
From 2006 to 2013, Shelley was the Controller for Crystal Ventures, based out of Cleveland Ohio. While new to the venture industry when she came on board, she was primarily responsible for all fund and management company accounting, reporting, budgeting, capital calls, distributions, legal document review, LP communication and was the liaison with the tax and audit providers. She also was instrumental in guiding the firm through its international tax compliance process for a fund with primarily non-US LPs. She also had the valuable experience of managing the wind down process of a fund at the end of its life cycle. For the management company, Shelley was also responsible for office management, payroll, IT and health care. Her time at Crystal inspired her interest in the venture industry and gave her the invaluable experience of working for a small company and wearing multiple hats.
Shelley started her career in the state and local tax department at Arthur Andersen in Cleveland, Ohio where she worked primarily with large multistate corporations. She also earned her CPA license while at Arthur Andersen. Shelley also spent two years working with financial modeling and budgeting at KeyBank and later went back into public accounting at Deloitte where she became a manager in their state and local tax consulting division.
She graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Accounting from the University of Akron. Shelley is also a member of the Ohio Society of CPAs, the American Institute of CPAs and the VCBC. She enjoys spending quality time with her children, volunteering locally and enjoying outdoor activities in the beautiful Florida sunshine.
